Phrases that drive me nuts

Mike Cleverly, a neighbor and longtime friend, spent Friday night watching a basketball game on TV with Thompson. He said Thompson was clearly hobbled by the broken leg. "Medically speaking, he's had a rotten year," he said.

But he added that "he's the last person in the world I would have expected to kill himself. I would have been less surprised if he had shot me."

Adding to the list of stupid things to say. Forgetting the fact that Hunter Thompson killing himself didn’t surprise me at all, it seems right in line, but really was he the “LAST PERSON” who would do that? What about some guy who heads up a Suicide Prevention group? Or a Priest who would believe it to be a mortal sin to kill oneself.

Also adding: “No one could have imagined” to this list. I heard that over the weekend. Really, “NO ONE”? meaning no person now or in the past. “Could” meaning not that they did, but “Could” have. And finally “imagined”….are humans so uncreative?

Someday, pigs might grow wings and fly. And someone will say on that day “No one could have imagined that pigs could fly”…well I just did.

This is added to list that already contains:

"Nothing could be further from the truth"...REALLY? NOTHING?

and of course people who say Samwich, when the mean SAND-WICH.

And the worst of all, and I heard John Feinstein say it this week on the radio, is people who say "LITERALLY" when the mean exactly the oppposite. For example, Mr. Feinstein, the Lakers did NOT LITERALLY implode. Neither individually or Collectively...NO IMPLOSION. So, what you meant to say, the "Virtually" imploded, but not LITERALLY.

OMG that kills me.
